Tillicum Burnside CCV Planning - A note about the first CCV walk

Saturday morning saw a gathering of some 25 Gorge Tillicum community residents as
part of Saanich's first walking consultation for the Tillicum Burnside Centre, Corridor and
Village plan. Four Saanich staff led the walk and the discussion that followed
afterwards. We walked through the Fairways shopping complex, up Tillicum to
Maddock, up Albina to Burnside, east on Burnside to Davin, then back to Fairways
along Maddock, Earl Grey and Obed.
I guess the core idea was to get a feel for some of detail of the neighbourhood and to
listen to local input about what concerns we have. The best part of the whole event was
that it felt like the Saanich staff were genuinely interested in what we had to say. So, a
good beginning. Now it remains to get through the rest of the consultation with some
clear messaging about what is worth preserving in our community and what could do
with some renovation. As explained in our last newsletter, the Official Community Plan
guidelines allow for some serious height increases in the area covered by the Tillicum
Burnside plan. But a closer look suggests that there are some parts within the plan
area that should clearly be preserved as they are. There are also some parts that could
be redesigned with community benefit in mind. This won't happen unless we participate and make out feelings known. Please consider taking part in some of the consultations.
The next event is a walk about starting at Rebel Ink at 18h on Wednesday, 14 May.
There are seven other consultations planned, all listed on our website, our Facebook
page and on the Saanich website.
